Clegg Construction secures £3.75m Leeds University contract

BUILDING contractor Clegg Construction has secured a £3.75m contract to transform the University of Leeds’ school of mathematics into a 21st century learning facility.

The contract involves a complete overhaul of the Grade II listed building’s interior to provide a variety of new study environments.

The Thorpe Park-headquartered company will ensure that the facility – that’s  located at the heart of the university – remains fully operational throughout the renivations.

The new facility will include social areas, group study areas and a library and seminar room for individual work which can be converted into a large single space for events.

The building was designed by architects Chamberlain Powell and Bon, a company that became famous in the 1960s for pushing concrete technology to its limits.

Their work at the University of Leeds and their design of the Barbican in London, which is one of Britain’s largest listed buildings, are now recognised as being among the best buildings of the 1960s.

The transformation of the School of Mathematics forms part of the University’s five year £300m improvement programme and is due for completion next summer.

Clegg has also recently started work on transforming 9 Bond Court in Leeds on behalf of the Northern Trust.

The £2.1 million contract is the latest development in the regeneration of the Bond Court business area and follows Clegg’s refurbishment of Minerva House earlier this year on behalf of Evans Property Group.

The transformation of 9 Bond Court into a “statement office building” will involve stripping and replacing most of the external façade and a whole new entrance.

During the process Clegg will have to protect the internal environment and work around current tenants including Stewarts Law, Redmayne-Bentley, Begbies Traynor and property agent Knight Frank.

Work on the 68,230 sq ft office building started in September and is due for completion in June 2015.
