Confidence high as Carnaby attracts expanding businesses

AN INDUSTRIAL estate in East Yorkshire is turning the corner after a surge of activity driven by the expansion of a number of businesses in the region.

Dave Garness, managing director of Garness Jones, said Carnaby Industrial Estate just south of Bridlington, was particularly hard-hit by the recession but has become the location of choice recently for companies with interests ranging from windows to women’s fashion.

He said: “The deals which we have completed in recent months indicate a real change of fortune for Carnaby and a high level of confidence among the businesses which have chosen to invest in the site.”

Barnsley-based window and door manufacturer Sash UK opened a workshop at Bessingby Industrial Estate, Bridlington, more than three years ago and has now moved that operation to Lancaster Road, Carnaby.

Stephen Morrell, managing director of Sash UK, said the business is manufacturing windows, doors and conservatories for the residential and commercial markets but has developed additional sites in Bridlington and Exeter to service the caravan and holiday home sector.

He said: “Caravans and holiday homes are now about three-quarters of our business and the fact that we have moved from renting space at Bessingby to buying these premises at Carnaby is a sign that things are going well.

“We needed bigger premises and we’ve more than doubled in size to around 8,000 sq ft, giving us more room for stock and more space for our fitting teams to work.”

Detech Europe and Clinicare have expanded their existing Bridlington operations. Detech Europe provides equipment, service, spares and training to the electronics manufacturing industry and has acquired part of Lancaster House, also in Lancaster Road.

The remainder of the building has been acquired by Clinicare Waste Solutions, which specialises in meeting the waste management needs of the clinical and healthcare industries with clients including residential and nursing homes as well as children’s nurseries and play groups.

Garness Jones has also agreed the lease of the former East Riding College site at Carnaby with Melza Limited, a local business which sells women’s vintage fashion worldwide, online under the Lindy Bop brand.

Dave Garness said: “Melza initially took one building but their business has absolutely boomed and the speed of their expansion prompted them to very quickly take a lease on the second property.

“Carnaby is a well-established and very well-known site which had attracted little demand, possibly because of its semi-rural location and the seasonal nature of many businesses in the Bridlington area.

“But we’ve worked hard to make people aware of the benefits of the site, its good accessibility to Hull and York and the quality of the other businesses operating from Carnaby.

“That has helped us attract new businesses and companies which recognise a great opportunity to expand what they are doing. In addition to the completed deals we also have some nearby development land under offer and that increases our confidence that there is more activity to come at Carnaby. I am pleased that we have more land available for further enquiries.”
