In Brief: Deloitte team spruce up city; Teacher develops online business game; and more

SEVENTY-FIVE staff from the Leeds office of Deloitte put their green fingers to work as part of the business advisory firm’s annual Community Investment Day by helping to get Holbeck into shape for next year’s Holbeck in Bloom awards.

The volunteers left their desks to spend two days helping environmental regeneration charity Groundwork to landscape various sites along the route in Holbeck which will be taken by the Leeds in Bloom judges.

Part of the Green Corridor initiative, the work included clearing weeds and planting bulbs at St Matthews Church, Willoughby Terrace and Holbeck Day Centre.

Teams from Deloitte also visited Ingram Road Primary School and New Bewerley Primary School as part of the World of Work day to give children whose parents might not be employed a better understanding of working and to inspire them to have a goal for their working lives.

Paul Vasey and Fortune & VentureA YORKSHIRE public-school teacher has designed an online game for pupils, which aims to make learning about business fun.

Fortune & Venture, developed by Paul Vasey, a business studies teacher at Read School near Selby, gives up to four players the opportunity to buy businesses, generate customers, deal with ever changing business conditions and decide whether it is the best time to sell or keep hold of the business.

Players travel around the board on the throw of electronic dice and if they land on a business, they can buy it. There are also business hazards along the way and multiple choice business theory questions.

For the first year, anyone can sign up at www.fortuneandventure.com and play for free. Schools will be charged a subscription after the first year.

Mr Vasey said: “Pupils within one school can play against each other or schools can play against other schools either in the same town or anywhere in the world.”
