York firm prepares to dazzle at Milan Expo

IT WOWED the world at London 2012 with its construction of Thomas Heatherwick’s stunning Olympic cauldron and now, York company Stage One prepares to do so again with the build of the UK Pavilion at the Milan Expo.

Designed by Wolfgang Buttress, the UK Pavilion embraces the Expo theme of ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’ and will explore how creativity, science and technology combine to tackle these issues. The focal point will be a delicate, orb-like structure called The Hive, which will pulsate and buzz with the sounds of a real bee colony.

Construction work is underway on the ground in Italy, but the visit provides an opportunity to see Stage One’s manufacturing base where concepts and ideas initially take shape and become reality.

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) chief executive Dominic Jermey visited the Yorkshire company. He said: “Success in international markets is at the heart of the government’s long-term plan to build a stronger, more competitive economy.

“The UK’s participation in the Milan Expo will promote the UK’s world leading expertise in the creative, life sciences, agri-tech, and food and drink sectors to our top trade and investment partners. Through the UK Pavilion we will reach millions of visitors and build on the reputation of the UK established at the London 2012 Olympics.

“I was amongst those gasping in awe as the cauldron manufactured by Stage  One took centre stage during the opening ceremony, and it is a privilege to visit the company’s base to see first-hand what is in store in Milan, and to get a feel for how it brings concepts and ideas to life.

“The company has a clear ambition and focus to make an impact in the global marketplace, and it is an inspiration for other Yorkshire businesses in proving that UK firms can lead the way.”

Mark Johnson, managing director of Stage One, added: “We’re delighted to have been selected to construct the UK Pavilion at the Milan Expo. It is a significant project for Stage One and reflects our increasingly strong relationship with architects and designers. It also reflects our aspiration to make an impact in overseas markets and secure international business.

“We welcome the opportunity to discuss those aspirations with Mr Jermey, and to hear how UKTI is supporting more companies like Stage One to successfully compete in the global race. His visit is a strong validation of our collaborative approach and our ability to successfully deliver creative construction projects.”
