Kings Cross of the North ambition for York Central

THE creation of a Kings Cross of the North is the ambition for the 86-acre brownfield site next to York railway station.
A new central business district for the city, next to the East Coast Main Line, would significantly improve and change York, which agents say “lacks a coherent and focused prime office area”.
Room for 860,000 sq ft of commercial space and more than 1,000 housing, the area will retain the National Railway Museum and existing businesses.
Already £27m has been committed through the West Yorkshire Transport Fund to refurbish the railway station, while £10m has been secured to open up the York Central site for development.
Investors at MIPIM will be told: “The potential for this site is huge and oprovides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a Kings Cross of the North.
“York Central represents the largest and most important brownfield redevelopment opportunity in the city with potential to meet the significant latent demand for high quality office accommodation thereby enabling the city to attract growth within the high value sub sectors of finance, insurance and pensions, real estate and professional services.”
