Steel firm sentenced after amputation following on-site incident

A STEEL processing firm has been sentenced and fined over £13,000 after a worker lost his arm because of safety failings on site.
Hi-Tech Special Steels admitted that it had failed to carry out sufficient risk assessment on the machinery that injured experienced operator Roger Marshall.
Mr Marshall’s arm was amputated after it was crushed in a machine used to straighten coils.
When rearranging the metal offcuts positioned to straighten the coil, he was stuck by a clamp which crushed his arm against a die block.
Rotherham-based Hi-Tech pleaded guilty after a Health and Safety Executive investigation found that Mr Marshall had not had sufficient health and safety training, and the machine in question was inadequately guarded with dangerous parts exposed.
The firm was fined £10,000 with a £1000 victim surcharge and £2167 costs.
