Wind turbine company joins ITM Power trials

SHEFFIELD-based energy storage and clean fuel company ITM Power has signed up a leading wind turbine company to take part in its Hydrogen On Site Trials (HOST).
Vestas Wind Systems AS will use ITM Power’s transportable high pressure refueling unit (HFuel), which will be used to power two hydrogen Ford Transit vehicles.
Vestas joins Scottish and Southern Energy, which agreed to join the trials last week, and other organisations which are taking part in HOST.
Vestas, headquartered in Denmark, is a world leader in wind technology and has more than 40,000 wind turbines around the world.
Graham Cooley, chief executive of ITM Power, said of the latest win: “We are obviously delighted that Vestas, the world leader in the manufacture and installation of wind turbines, has joined our HOST programme.
“Their assessment of our energy storage: clean fuel technology, using wind energy, for decarbonising return to base logistics fleet vehicles, will provide ITM Power with incredibly useful data.”
Rob Sauven, of Vestas Technology R&D, said:”Wind is an energy source on par with oil and gas and we are pleased to support ITM Power in the development of its Transportable High Pressure Hydrogen Refuelling Station to demonstrate the proposition of decarbonising vehicle fleets, using hydrogen derived from wind energy. This fits well with Vestas’ goal of generating the greatest and most sustainable return on wind for our customers.”
