30% of the properties available so far were sold on the first weekend.Eleven houses and 32 apartments went on sale.

The site was designed by London architect Richards Partington, including the five-foot chocolate orange sculpture.

David Wilson Homes bought the site in conjunction with Henry Boot Developments in 2013 and the firm has been on site since then.

Paul Hogan, sales director at David Wilson Homes, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the reception the launch of The Chocolate Works has received. The praise and positive feedback has been overwhelming and this has been supported by the huge demand for the properties at the development.

“We have worked very hard to ensure this iconic development complements its historic setting and offers luxury and bespoke homes that will stand the test of time. The site was left derelict, so to see it come to life once more is extremely rewarding.”

Mike Grimes, local historian and former factory worker at the site, added: “This site is steeped in history and plays a major role in York’s rich tapestry. Chocolate has been a major contributor to York’s economy for years; indeed it has shaped the city. To see this site being brought back to life with the love and passion it warrants is absolutely fantastic.”
