Call for £12m low carbon projects in Leeds City Region

BUSINESSES are being encouraged to apply to a £12m fund that aims to shift Leeds City Region firms towards lower carbon emissions.

They are responding to calls in turn from Leeds City Region LEP in their European Structural and Investment Funds Strategy.

No less that £500,000 will be allocated from the European Regional Development Fund to any single project, and they will then be working with the LEP Growth Service.

Compared to other LEP regions, Leeds has one of the highest CO2 emissions, with 71% coming from homes and businesses.

Available figures from 2011 showed that 233MW of low carbon energy was being
generated in Leeds City Region, representing only a fraction of the estimated 6,246GWh resource available.

In a statement, the managing authority of the project, the Department for Communities and Local Government said: “Despite the City Region’s undoubted economic strengths and assets, it is not realising its full potential.

“Leeds City Region’s vision is to unlock the potential of the City Region, developing an economic powerhouse that will create jobs and prosperity.

“This in turn will benefit the rest of the country, producing faster economic growth for the UK as a whole, as well as more tax revenues and a lower benefit bill for the Exchequer.”
