Farm group Bowood collapses months after animal cruelty allegations

THE halal abattoir at the centre of animal cruelty allegations has ceased trading six months after the release of secretly-filmed footage.
Animal Aid filmed at Bowood Farm’s Thirsk site, and its video led to the Food Standards Agency launching an investigation, saying “there is no excuse for treating animals in the way shown on the video and we are therefore investigating the footage with a view to prosecution.”
Business recovery firm Leonard Curtis has now confirmed Kevin Murphy, Phil Deyes and John Titley have been appointed as joint administrators of Bowood Farms Ltd, which trades as Bowood Yorkshire Lamb.
The company has collapsed and all staff have been made redundant, with the administrators looking for buyers for the property and assets.
The group’s most recent accounts, which were filed in August 2014, complained of the “very difficult trading conditions” and forecast another “very challenging” year ahead.
Those accounts showed the group had made a £73,000 pre-tax profit on revenues of £29.2m, and employed around 50 people.
