Convenience store expert leading bid to buy Morrisons stores

THE man leading the plans to buy Morrisons’ chain of convenience stores has been named as Mike Greene, the former chairman of the Association of Convenience Stores.
Morrisons is in exclusive talks with a team supported by Greybull Capital to buy around 160 stores as the supermarket group re-evaluates its convenience store strategy.
Mr Greene, who appeared on Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire programme in 2011, has had a long career in retail, working for Spar, Shell UK in the 1990s as petrol stations became convenience stores, before spending 10 years running the retail consultancy him!. He currently has a number of consultancy roles and directorships.
He describes himself as having been “heavily involved in the growth of small format and convenience retailing around the world” and is a recognised speaker on changing shopper and retail trends.
Morrisons was late into the convenience store market, and struggled to make it profitable when it did make the move. Chief executive David Potts, who took over in March, is undertaking a root-and-branch review of the supermarket’s operations and the end of the foray into convenience stores is expected to be one of the major outcomes.
