Lifestyle: Westrow Salons, North Star Coffee, Firecracker Ball

SALON firm Westrow has expanded with the appointment of four additions to their Street Lane Salon to help cope with demand for colour services.

The firm, which has eight salons and a training academy, have now added Ellie Wells and Priya Verdi to the team as assistants, whilst Rachel Parkin brings eight years’ of experience to her role as senior stylist and joins stylist and L’Oréal Professionnel I.D Artist, Kate Harrison.

The new recruits will join franchisees Jenny Pelter and Amy Lopez, who have been shortlisted for at the British Hairdressing Awards, along with stylist and colour specialist Carly Aplin.

Westrow Street Lane opened in December 2013 and after already scooping an award for Best Salon Design in the first twelve months

Steve Rowbottom, director at Westrow, said: “This year is already promising to be a great one for the Westrow brand, and we want to shape the company into one of the best employers in Yorkshire where new skills and innovation ignite passion amongst our creative team.”

THE entrepreneurs behind North Star Coffee Roasters, a Meanwood-based roastery, have made it through to the final round of the Young British Foodie Awards.

North Star was founded two years ago by Alex Kragiopoulos, and he has been joined by partner Holly Bowman, a former coffee buyer and qualified taster.

The firm successfully raised £20,000 through a Kickstarter campaign in May to purchase a large capacity roaster and have now been shortlisted as finalists in the YBFs, where they will be competing against two other roasteries, The Roasting Shed, based in London and The Slow Brew Coffee Company, based in Manchester.

They will find out on 15 September if they have won at an awards ceremony held at The Tate.

Mr Kragiopoulos said: “It was really nerve-wracking to stand in front of the judges alongside such stiff competition but we are thrilled to have made it to the final.”

Other homegrown finalists include Wakefield’s Swillington Farm and the Leeds Indie Food Festival.

THE Firecracker Ball, held at Rudding Park Hotel, will be headlined by pop rockers Texas.

Organisers are hoping Texas will attract a capacity guest list to help them to reach a target of £2m, raised for Barnardo’s since in 2002.

Having appeared in Leeds earlier in the year to celebrate their 25th anniversary, this will be there only other appearance in Yorkshire this year.

Kirsty Guy, relationship manager, from Barnardo’s said:” Texas are global superstars and so when they agreed to play we couldn’t believe it. This is one of, if not the largest band to ever take the stage at The Firecracker Ball, since it first began.”

She continued: “With Texas’ appearance, other fantastic entertainment, high profile celebrity appearances and ‘money can’t buy’ auction prizes, tickets to the ball are likely to sell out very quickly. With only seven tables left we would urge people to get in touch rather than face disappointment.”
