Food group to invest £38m in rebuilding Sheffield factory

FOOD manufacturers 2 Sisters is to invest £38m in rebuilding its Pennine Foods factory in Sheffield.
The funding, which is part of a £55m investment programme in four sites in its Meal Solutions division, will safeguard more than 800 jobs at its Waterthorpe site. Factories in Carlisle and south Wales will also be refurbished and expanded.
The division wholly focused on own-label products, and predominantly produces ready meals, soups and sauces for Marks & Spencer.
“We continue to see an opportunity to drive further market share growth in the ready meal sector supported by a new state of the art factory in Sheffield,” said Simon Wookey, divisional managing director at 2 Sisters.
“It will also create significant opportunities to improve the way we operate as a business whilst also helping to safeguard and potentially create jobs in all our factories.”
The Sheffield site was established 30 years ago and has now reached capacity. When building work begins next April, some work will be moved permanently to Carlisle and south Wales, which will increase opportunities for new ranges to be produced in Sheffield once the refurbishment is completed at the end of 2017.
