European airline routes launched as 2m fly with Wizz Air

LOW cost airline Wizz Air is launching a route to Cluj in Romania as it celebrates a 2 million passenger milestone from Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

The new route will see Wizz Air embark on two flights a week from Doncaster Sheffield Airport from July 22 2016.

This will be the 11th Wizz route connecting Yorkshire with Central and Eastern European destinations.

Chris Harcombe, head of aviation development at Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: “This is fantastic news for the region.

“Our relationship with them and this proven demand for their services has meant that we are able to continue to grow our route portfolio with Wizz and Cluj will be our eleventh destination adding to popular routes to Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Lithuania.

“We are expecting this new route to carry an additional 30,000 passengers through the airport in its first year of operation.

“Wizz have provided Yorkshire passengers with more choice in 2015 with Lublin in Poland and Kosice in Slovakia being added to their destination list.

“Thanks to these routes passengers from our region have direct access to more cities in more countries than ever before.

“Doncaster Sheffield Airport is the UKs newest airport and this year we celebrated our tenth anniversary. It is great to be celebrating major milestones like this in our tenth year in business.”

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is Wizz Air’s second largest UK base and the only one in Yorkshire. The airport currently operates a total of 33 Wizz Air flights per week to ten destinations including Bucharest in Romania, and Gdansk, Warsaw and Wroclaw in Poland.

“With the new Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS) on track to connect the M18 to the airport, we believe demand in European destinations will continue to increase,” added Chris.

Wizz Air recently announced that they have carried 18 million passengers in the rolling 12 month period to August 2015, a 20% increase year on year.
