CSR: Movember Foundation, Young Carers, Just Giving

THREE lawyers from the Leeds office of Squire Patton Boggs have cycled from the firm’s Park Lane office to each of its offices in Manchester, Birmingham and London.
The lawyers raised more than £9,000 for men’s health charity, the Movember Foundation.
Peter Worsencroft, David Smith and Jon Chesman, cycled 280 miles in five days. Mr Worsencroft, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in June, said: “Although my diagnosis was a huge shock, it really brought home the importance of seeking early medical advice if something doesn’t feel right – something men tend to be particularly bad at!
“We’re very proud to support Movember’s endeavours in developing new treatments against male forms of cancer, as well as raising awareness of symptoms and what can be done to avoid things becoming more serious down the line.”
John Alderton, office managing partner of Squire Patton Boggs in Leeds, said: “Pete’s diagnosis really underlined the importance of the work of the Movember Foundation and we are delighted to support the team’s fundraising efforts for such an important cause.
“We have a lot of very keen cyclists at the firm, but I don’t believe that anyone has cycled consecutively to every office so congratulations to Pete, David and Jon for achieving this milestone. I’d also like to thank our colleagues, clients and friends around the UK who have given so generously.”

LEEDS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION’S Young Carers campaign is aiming to reach £4,000 by November 10.
The LCF is planning to support around 200 young carers in the city, raising money for charities that support them and give them a break from providing practical and emotional care to members of their families.
They estimate that there are 2,000 young carers in the Leeds area and are aiming to help as many as they can with an Indiegogo campaign here .
Scarlett, a young carer in Leeds, aged 13, said: “I’m very aware my life is quite a lot different from my friends – I have a harder life. It makes me feel upset that someone is having a better life than me. My friends get to go out all the time and see everyone – and I stay in.”

A TEAM from P2P lending platform rebuildingsociety ran Rough Runner last weekend in aid of Maggie Lynch, a friend of the business community along with her husband James, an established lender.
After two bouts of pneumonia in 2011, Mrs Lynch’s health deteriorated and she was hospitalised. Later that year she was diagnosed with Mastcell instability and multiple chemical sensitivities, meaning she has to live in a highly-regulated environment.
They have launched a Just Giving page here and the funds will be used for new air filters and other supplies to improve her quality of life.
Kylie-Jo Greeff of rebuildingsociety said: “Maggie and her husband have been friends of the rebuildingsociety community for some time and we recently learned of the struggles she fights on a daily basis.
“Without the air filters she needs, her quality of life is extremely poor. We hope that we can raise the funds to provide her with the dignity and security that she deserves to live her life in peace and without fear.”
