Merger sees taxi firm acquire new premises

TRANSPORT business Sheffield City Taxis is set to expand after purchasing new premises with help from the bank.

Barclays provided new funding to enable the purchase, as well as the installation of innovative technology to help the firm keep up with the industry.

Sheffield CIty Taxis was established in 1996, and recently merged with Mercury Cars. Their previous base on City Road, Sheffield, was not big enough to accommodate the arrangement.

Their refurbished offices are now on Waterside Court, Bold Street, Sheffield.

Sheffield City Cabs now employs more than 110 people in the office supporting over 1400 drivers across South Yorkshire. Turnover for the current year is expected to exceed £10m.

Arnie Singh, director at Sheffield City Taxis, said: “We’re seeing a digital revolution in the taxi business and it’s crucial that we can provide the best service to our customers in the most efficient way with the booking options our customers expect.

“Working with the Barclays Digital Eagles we’ve also launched a new mobile app that allows customers to order cabs online and speeds up our response times making us truly more competitive.”

Steven Armstrong, senior business banking manager at Barclays put together the funding package for the deal and said: “We have a strong relationship with Arnie and his team and this has enabled us to turn the deal round quickly and see the purchase and re-fit of the excellent new premises providing the growth room they need for the future. Sheffield City Taxis is a major player in the UK taxi market and we look forward to seeing their continued success as they develop their services and innovate for the future.”
