Light goes on at vintage etailer smashing £1m sales

LEEDS ecommerce business Dowsing & Reynolds, a purveyor of vintage lightbulbs, which first launched on eBay two years ago, is on its way to £1m in annual revenues.

The firm, was launched from James Dowsing-Reynolds’ kitchen table in 2013. It has now returned a half year turnover, for March to September 2015, of £416,000.

With a record-breaking month in October, when sales increased to £113,000, the firm is well on their way to achieving £1m in revenues as they enter peak Christmas trading period.

Entrepreneur Mr Dowsing-Reynolds, with his wife and marketing director Ally, employs nine members of staff. He moved the company to larger premises at Mabgate, in Leeds city centre, to facilitate their growth.

Mr Dowsing-Reynolds said: “To hit the £1m annual turnover mark after just two years will be a massive achievement for us as a young business and pushes us into that next phase of growth. Forecasted sales have never been stronger.

“It started with a lightbulb moment to sell vintage bulbs, and now we’ve expanded the range to offer the full spectrum of design-led, affordable lighting products and diversified into other fashionable home décor items you won’t find on the high street.

“It’s working – we now export to 33 countries worldwide and receive over 100,000 hits on our website a month.”

Mr Dowsing-Reynolds is no stranger to business, having already set up a family business selling interior and exterior home products. He later turned the premises into a bar.

Dowsing & Reynolds has sold more than 40,000 light bulbs, and sells to consumers and commercial audiences via its own ecommerce website, Not On The High Street, eBay and Amazon.
