Healthcare investor buys out Bowman Riley division

HEALTHCARE investor Gary Shuckford has bought a two-thirds stake in Skipton business Bowman Riley Healthcare after it was split from its parent architectural practice.
Bowman Riley Architects was formed in 2003 with the healthcare business being created in 2011 to service the particular needs of that sector. This includes designing buildings, re-configuring existing properties and rationalising healthcare estates.
The businesses will now be independent, with Mr Shuckford having bought Bowman Riley Architects’ stake for an undisclosed sum.
The deal followed a review of options about how the healthcare division could attract the investment thought necessary to support its expansion.
Mr Shuckford spent 24 years at Leeds-based EMIS Group, rising to be operations director then strategic research director when it was an AIM-listed company.
He left in April 2014 but retains a 3.4% stake, which is currently valued at £24m.
Mr Shuckford has also been working with Bowman Riley Innovate – its product development consultancy – as a consultant for the last 17 months, as well as being a director at Edenbridge Healthcare and a visiting professor at Leeds Beckett University.
Bowman Riley Architects, which has offices in Leeds, Skipton and London, said it “will take this opportunity to continue to develop and grow the business” and will pursue opportunities in areas such as building consultancy.
Sandip Khroud, Corporate senior associate, from Gateley Plc’s Leeds office acted for Gary Shuckford on the deal, assisted by Martin Barnes, corporate trainee solicitor.
