Budget chain creates 30 jobs in Leeds

DISCOUNT retailer Poundworld is creating 30 jobs at a new store in Leeds as it continues towards its target of 60 openings this year.

The Normanton-based brand is opening its 317th site with a 3,000 sq ft shop in Seacroft Green Shopping Centre on March 10.

Trading director Chris Edwards Jr said: “We’re a Yorkshire business and we already have stores in Leeds that are incredibly popular. We’re expecting our new Seacroft store to be a popular addition to the Seacroft Green shopping centre.”

It will be the first opening since Poundworld’s new chief executive Gerry Gray took the helm following the departure of founder Christopher Edwards Sr. Mr Gray, a former chief operations officer at Tesco UK, started in the role on March 7.

The discounter has undergone rapid expansion in recent years, reaching £422.3m turnover last year. It is now aiming to add 60 shops per year for the next three years.

In May, it was bought by private equity firm TPG Capital for £150m , before securing an additional £50m banking facility with Santander six months later, in order to support growth.

Poundworld is one of a number of businesses taking space at the recently-announced 2.5 acre redevelopment on the junction of Regent Street and Skinner Lane in Leeds. It plans to take 7,500 sq ft of space.
