First phase of £2.5m Harrogate Police Station revamp completes

THE first phase of a £2.5m scheme to convert The Old Police Station in Harrogate into residential properties has completed.

The development, which comprises 25 houses and apartments, is being carried out on behalf of York-based GEM Construction’s client, property developer Harrogate Restoration.

Originally designed in 1927, the Grade II listed buildings were home to the Harrogate police up until 2012, when the force moved to headquarters further out of town.

Julian Rooney, partner at Harrogate Restoration, said: “There has been a tremendous amount of effort and attention to detail over the last two years to convert this landmark building into high quality modern living accommodation. Our vision was to restore the building to its former glory and to do this we needed to work with its unique original features in a creative way to incorporating them into the design. The completion of the first twelve properties is a significant milestone in the development and we are now pushing ahead with the second phase which includes a further 11 properties.”

Mike Green, chairman of GEM Construction, said:  “This is a really interesting project needing all our specialist skills in restoring historic buildings. Our team of roofers, joiners, builders and plasterers are working hard to deliver a high quality finish whilst respecting the original fabric of the building. It is great to see our work taking shape and these iconic buildings being brought back to life. We are delighted to have made a start on phase two already due to the demand for the properties.”

The properties are being marketed by Carter Jonas.
