Export growth fuels success for medtech manufacturer

BRANDON MEDICAL, the Leeds-based manufacturer of operating theatre lighting, AV systems, control systems and equipment, has seen a surge in overseas orders with exports now accounting for 45% of sales for the £6m turnover business.

It’s a 17% increase on the previous year and growth has been fuelled by the appointment of a network of a new distributors covering the major Asia Pacific countries including Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia.

Substantial growth has also been seen in the Middle East and Latin American markets, with large orders worth more than £340,000 from healthcare and medical technology companies in Colombia and Mexico.

Brandon Medical supplies its state-of-the-art medical pendants, medical AV suites, theatre lights and operating tables to leading hospitals and veterinary surgeries here in the UK and around the world. Its range of fully integrated audio visual systems allows surgical procedures to be conducted and monitored remotely. They are also used in surgical skills training centres for training new surgical skills and provide a fully auditable record of operations.

Managing director Graeme Hall explained how Brandon Medical has added to its product range to meet the requirements of its international customers.

He said: “We have added our new and improved minor surgical light, Astralite plus, to our expert medical lighting range, providing a light with best-in-class performance for minor surgical interventions.

“We have also made improvements to our existing range, increasing the performance of our Quasar eLite operating theatre lights and we have launched a new range of Atlas Pendants with a novel braking system for use in  critical care environments.

“Our most export focused addition to the range would be the new Anteris operating table – a product Brandon Medical has launched because of high demand in export markets and was exhibited at this year’s Arab Health show in Dubai.”

The Asia Pacific distributor network is overseen by a dedicated team based in Kuala Lumpur. Last summer, the team was invited to the company’s purpose-built manufacturing facility and head office in Leeds, to receive intensive product training and get to know the company better.

The company recently scooped the Medilink export achievement award in recognition of its overseas sales growth. It is the latest in a string of awards recognising the company’s achievements at the forefront of product innovation, design excellence and improvements in patient care.

Mr Hall said: “I would like to thank Medilink for the award and congratulate everyone involved, particularly our growing export team and our extensive distributor network for their excellent performance over the last 12 months.”

Brandon Medical moved to the new 50,000 sq ft premises in Morley two years ago, following a £2.5m investment. The facility, which was opened by HRH Princess Anne, allowed the company to double its manufacturing capacity and it now employs a 48-strong workforce in addition to its worldwide distributor network.
