Book of condolence opens in Leeds for Jo Cox MP

A BOOK of condolence was opened in Leeds on Friday to remember West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox, who was killed after being shot and stabbed in Birstall last week.

The book was opened in the Portland Crescent entrance of Leeds Civic Hall.

Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “Jo was a great friend to many people in Leeds and the number of people who joined us on the Civic Hall steps to remember her, shows what an impact she made, even outside her own constituency.

“Our thoughts remain with Jo’s family as they try to come to terms with their dreadful loss.”

Lord Mayor of Leeds, Gerry Harper, added: “We understand that many people across Leeds will want to be able to pay their respects following Jo’s tragic death. This book of condolence will allow people to share their thoughts and feelings and show that we stand united with our neighbours in Kirklees.”

As a mark of respect to Mrs Cox, flags on Leeds Town Hall, Leeds Civic Hall, Pudsey Town Hall and Morley Town Hall flew at half-mast.

A one minute silence was also held on the steps of the civic hall.
