Leeds jobs on the line as Carlsberg announces plans to outsource 900 positions

A REVIEW of operations at brewery giant Carlsberg will reportedly affect 900 staff, including those at its Leeds operations.

The company, which has a depot in Tingley on the outskirts of Leeds, is planning to outsource secondary logistics to DHL Tradeteam in 2017 and 2018.

A spokesperson said that it was too early to say what impact the move will have on employees, but the company would have a full discussion and consultation process with affected staff.

It is unclear how many people are employed at the site, as the spokesperson said they do not disclose staff numbers for individual sites.

Julian Momen, chief executive officer, Carlsberg UK, commented: “The review and subsequent proposal have been given the considerable time and care they warrant.

“We recognise this is a significant change for our business and in particular our employees. Our focus over the coming months will be on providing all potentially affected employees with the support they require.”

Union Unite expressed “disappointment and dismay” at the proposals.

A spokesperson said: “The bottom line for Unite is that of job security of our members – we will fight any proposals for compulsory redundancies.

“We will also want copper-bottomed guarantees on pay, and terms and conditions should workers be TUPE’d [Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations] to DHL Tradeteam.

Untion reps will be meeting Carlsber management at its Northampton headquarters on Friday 15 July

Besides delivering its own products, Carlsberg’s distribution operation also has contracts with the pub chains JD Wetherspoon and Punch Taverns.

The 11 Carlsberg depots are at: Alloa (Scotland), Birmingham, Bourne (Lincolnshire), Durham, Leeds, London, Manchester, Northampton, Nash Mead (Newport, South Wales), Southampton and Torquay.
