Green light for first phase of 182-bed city centre hotel
A MIXED-USE scheme north of Leeds city centre has been given the go-ahead for development of its first phase, a 182-bed hotel.
The landmark regeneration project is being developed by a consortium of Singapore-listed companies led by Heeton Holdings.
The scheme will create a sustainable urban destination on the 2.45 acre Bridge Street site that was once occupied by British Gas prior to its relocation to Holbeck.
The first phase of this scheme will be the refurbishment and extension of an existing office building at the south of the development, into a 182-bed contemporary hotel set within the new public realm.
Edwin Liu, country head (UK & Europe) at Heeton Holdings, said: “We are delighted to receive approval of the application for the first phase of our scheme having worked closely with the Leeds City Council and key stakeholders. We shall continue to work in collaboration on the remaining phases of this exciting regeneration project.”
Heeton Holdings said it has been in conversations with internationally recognised hotel brands, and plans to capture the increasing demand of a hotel of this size and quality in this part of the city following the success of the First Direct Arena and the up and coming development at Victoria Gate.
Site preparation works are now underway with construction due to begin in 2017.
The developers are soon to outline their vision for the wider site, which responds to its ideal location in the city centre close to the emerging Victoria Gate scheme and the emerging creative quarter in the Mabgate district. Proposals for the second phase of this major regeneration scheme at the north-eastern fringe of Leeds city centre will be on display as part of a pre-application consultation in the coming weeks.
