THE Yorkshire Dales and Lake District national parks have been extended, with the former growing by 24% in an attempt to increase rural tourism.

The move has increased the Yorkshire Dales park’s footprint in Cumbria, now with 28% of its land in the North West.

It has extended to Barbon in the west and past Orton and Smardale Gill in the north. Along with the Lake District the Dales have grown to encompass the area surrounding the M6.

The Lake District has grown by 3%. Together the parks have grown by 188 sq miles, bringing the combined total to 1,753 sq miles.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced the move in October 2015. The boundaries had been drawn up in the 1950’s.
