Airport flying high after record summer

MORE than 145,000 passengers flew from Doncaster Sheffield Airport making it the busiest month on record for the transport hub.

Just over 1m passengers have now flown from the Yorkshire base in the past 12 months.

Last month the Sheffield City Region airport announced a £200,000 investment in departure and security operations as it sought to speed up journey times.

Steve Gill, chief executive of Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: “This is fantastic news, we’ve had our busiest August ever and the number of people travelling from Doncaster Sheffield Airport is continuing to rise

“The improved accessibility of the airport, thanks to the Great Yorkshire Way link road from Junction 3 of the M18, and the 11new destinations on offer with Flybe, has significantly expanded our offer to people across the region. I strongly believe that an ambitious region such as ours needs a thriving airport and with the continued support of the region, we can achieve even more.”

Flybe flights to Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin have been introduced, and new routes to Dusseldorf and Dublin are set to take off.

The two new Flybe routes will take off from Doncaster Sheffield Airport on October 30.

The Great Yorkshire Way, a £56m link road from junction 3 of the M18 to Doncaster Sheffield Airport opened earlier this year.
