1 . Hull fair 2016
Date: Friday 7th – Saturday 15th October
Location: Walton Street, Hull

The Hull Fair returns for another year of fairground rides, food and treats we all know and love. As one of Europe’s largest travelling funfairs, Hull Fair is one of Hull’s biggest family traditions, marking its 700th anniversary in 1993!

As always, the Lord Mayor of Hull will be opening the fair and welcoming in the public to experience the sights and smells of the traditional fairground.

2. Off the Shelf
Date: Monday 3rd – Monday 31st October
Location: Various S1 venues, Sheffield

Now one of the largest literary festivals in the UK, Off the Shelf attracts some of the best known names in literature and media to Sheffield every year. The festival programme offers a wide range of over 200 events for all age groups including readings, performances, history talks, creative workshops and much more.

3. Villette
Date: Saturday 24th September – Saturday 15th October
Location: West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Bronte’s birth, the West Yorkshire Playhouse will be re-telling the story of Villette through a daring new adaption by a fellow Yorkshire writer, Linda Marshall-Griffiths.

With echoes of the illness and loss that wracked Brontë’s own life, both novel and play explore the redemptive power of love and the uncertainty of holding on to it.

4. National Car & Bike Hill Climb Championship
Date: Saturday 9th October
Location: Oliver’s Mount Road Racing, Scarborough

The National Speed Hill Climb normally throws up some circuit records. With the summer sun and temperatures high, this is the event which will have you on the edge of your seat as cars and bikes fly past on their way up the hill.

5. Wedding Fayre
Date: Sunday 9th October
Location: Rotherham Golf Club
