Property law firm launches in York

TWO property specialists have launched a new law firm in York.
Elizabeth Spencer and Sandra Elliott launched Spencer Elliott Property Lawyers, which are based at Blake House.
Ms Spencer was a legal executive formerly at a Legal 500-listed firm Langleys, whilst Ms Elliott is a licensed conveyancer who left her position after eight years to launch Spencer Elliott.
Ms Spencer spoke the TheBusinessDesk.com. She said: “We had talked about what we’d want in a firm and talked about setting one up for quite a long time. We decided to take the leap and do it because we wanted to have a small law firm offering a more personal approach to property.”
The company specialises in residential property in York, but has nationwide capabilities.
On setting up a business in the historic city, Ms Spencer said: “There does seem to be a good feel in York about supporting local businesses. We have come together with estate agents and financial advisors and are all supporting each other in the city.
“What we’ve found from coming from a very big law firm, clients don’t necessarily want to come into your offices -they’re busy work and family lives but they do still want to be kept in touch. We’re really basing the business on good communication.”
The pair registered the business five months ago, prior to the Brexit decision, and Ms Spencer said it was a scary time for the entrepreneurs.
“We were thinking ‘what is going to happen?’- but we’d already made that leap. The property market did seem to be shaky for a couple of weeks, clients didn’t know what would happen. Now it seems to have steadied itself – people decided they weren’t going to put their lives on hold.”
The market recovery has also been aided by the advent of help-to-buy, which Ms Spencer says is a big part of the business.
“There is a real push on new housing and we’re getting a lot of new build and help-to-buy work and an increase in the help-to-buy ISAs, that does reflect a push on residential in general.”
