Council approves flagship ‘site cluster’ housing scheme

A FLAGSHIP ‘site cluster’ development project to create 200 homes in Rotherham has been approved by the council.

The ‘site cluster’ approach aims to increase the numbers of homes for local residents where housing is built over several sites, not just in desirable locations, but also in places that would otherwise be left undeveloped.

It is hoped it will act as a catalyst for stimulating wider regeneration that addresses a range of local social, economic and environmental needs.

The programme will provide around 200 homes, including a mixture of properties for outright sale and starter homes, shared ownership, affordable rent and specialist housing.

Cabinet member for housing at Rotherham Borough Council, Cllr Dominic Beck, said: “Rotherham has an urgent need to deliver more homes for affordable rent and sale. I am delighted that the Cabinet has approved these ambitious plans for quality new housing; with a mix of tenures, which will provide a critical ingredient towards achieving our vision for a revitalised town.

“The Council is committed to delivering new housing; including specialist housing that is accessible and adaptable, accommodating the changing needs and circumstances of local people, as well as adding vibrancy and vitality to under-used areas.”

The Cabinet has agreed to fund all pre-development costs associated with securing planning permission and enabling construction works to start, and following a formal procurement process the  ouncil has appointed Wates Residential as its development partner.
