7 things to do with the kids this half term

Not sure what to do with the kids this week this half term? We’ve compiled a list of inexpensive activities and events in and around Yorkshire to help keep the children entertained throughout the October half term.
1. Halloween Spooktacular
This October half term, dare to venture down to Sheffield’s tropical butterfly centre, which will be transformed into a haunted house filled to the brim with spooky activities for you and the kids. Visit the new Witches’ cottage, brave the ghoulish tractor trailer ride, come face to face with monsters and ghosts, carve pumpkins and enjoy the resident wildlife at the centre.
2. Family Sculpture Workshops
Take a trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park this autumn half term and take part in a number of family-friendly workshops as well as various heritage trails and creative drop ins. Encourage your children to use their imagination and embrace their creative side with sculpting, printing, photographing, collaging and much more.
3. Free Creative Activities
Half term needn’t be expensive with the various activities on offer at Hepworth Galleries in Wakefield with everything from large sculpture drawing and gallery trails to picnics and printing. The free activities, workshops and crafts will keep you and the kids busy throughout the half term!
The annual pumpkin festival makes its return to Cannon Hall Farm, Barnsley for this week only, offering a chance to design and carve a pumpkin with the help from the onsite expert carvers. As well as the pumpkin patch, there will be also be daily shows from performing witches and a special trick or treat trail with prizes to be won.
5. Firework Displays
On both the 26th and 29th October, Flamingo Land will be adding an extra spark to its resort, zoo and theme park with special Halloween themed fireworks on display! There will also be a spooky show to enjoy before the fireworks – which will be accompanied by haunting melodies to further the spooky theme.
6. Dumper Racing
This week is your last chance to get involved in Diggerland’s special dumper racing events. Race around in JCB Skid Steer Loaders, swerving and sliding your way through the obstacle course, trying to avoid clocking up any penalties. Each race heat is between 3 or 4 “F1 wannabes”, and then the winners of the heats go head-to-head to determine the day’s overall winner. So if you’re looking for a bit of fun and friendly competition, get down to Diggerland this half term!
7. Morbid Monarchs
Discover the grisly truth about some of the world’s most ruthless rulers, their beastly behaviour and disgraceful downfalls at the Morbid Monarchs events all this week at the Royal Armoires in Leeds. Their stories will be told through dramatic performances, combat demonstrations, hands on history sessions, traditional storytelling and animation workshops. There will also be various Kings and Queens roaming the museum as well as face painting, drawing sessions and clay modelling!
