Morrisons spreads it thick with 12.5% Marmite price increase

MORRISONS is the latest supermarket to become involved in the spat between Unilever and Tesco over Marmite.

The unlikely battle dubbed ‘Marmageddon’ has a new player in the form of Bradford supermarket chain Morrisons.

The business has upped the price of the condiment by 12.5% amid a dispute between rival Tesco and supplier Unilever.

Tesco had refused to accept the prices of hundreds of Unilever goods including Marmite, which then disappeared from Tesco’s website and in store.

Trivial it may seem but commentators have said that it feeds into fears about food prices following the Brexit decision in June 2016.

Unilever has blamed the low value of the pound for price increases of up to 10% on brands such as Ben & Jerry’s, Persil and Pot Noodle.

Morrisons is now charging £2.64 for a 250g jar of Marmite, an increase on the £2.35 price it had been before.

But Morrisons isn’t the first Yorkshire-based supermarket to get involved, with Asda cutting the price of Marmite to £2.00 in a publicity stunt. The rest of the major supermarkets have kept their prices static.
