13th century pub and waterfall up for sale

A PUB which can trace its roots back to the 13th century and surrounding land which includes the waterfall famous for a well-known scene in the film ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ is up for sale.

The Hardraw Force waterfall, best known for Kevin Costner’s bathing scene in the 1991 film, is part of the £1.5m sale.

The adjoining pub, the Green Dragon Inn, was acquired by current owner Mark Thompson for £375,000 in 2003.

Hardraw is old English for Shepherd’s dwelling, and the land was once owned by the Cistercian Monks, who settled here before moving to Jervaulx Abbey in lower Wensleydale.
According to the pub, at the turn of the 19th century, owner Lord Wharncliffe sold the area to pay for his son’s 21st birthday.

The pub and lands are also home to The Hardraw Scaur Brass Band Festival, thought to be one of the oldest competitions of its kind.
