Cultural venue launches after £9.5m redevelopment

UNIVERSITY-OWNED Middleton Hall has reopened following a £9.5m redevelopment turning it into a cultural venue for the city.
The 400-seater concert hall and events space can be adapted to host theatre productions and cinema screenings. It will host a range of music and performances said the University of Hull, with bands and orchestras alongside cult and classic film showings in its schedule.
It also has recording studios, a filming and an editing suite.
It is part of the £200m campus investment by the University of Hull, which includes a £28m library refurbishment and an upcoming £25m health campus.
As a principal partner of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, the University said it will be playing an active role in hosting and producing cultural events during the year.
Professor Glenn Burgess, acting vice-chancellor at the University of Hull, said: “Middleton Hall has been refurbished to such a high-specification that it is now one of the best concert venues in the region. It is a significant addition to the cultural scene and is emblematic of the University’s commitment to creativity within the region.
“The Middleton Hall redevelopment is just one of the ways we aim to deliver an unforgettable experience for students, staff and the community during the City of Culture year and beyond.”
Middleton Hall first opened in 1967 and was designed by Sir Leslie Martin who went on to design other venues including the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow.
