Chinese New Year 2017: What’s on

Cities and towns across the UK will be seeing in the Chinese New Year this weekend as the year of the rooster begins. With several celebrations set to take place over the next couple of weeks in Yorkshire’s core city, there’s no excuse for missing out.

The Yorkshire and Humber Chinese New Year Dinner 2017 which is aimed at Leeds business people who engage with China will be held on Wednesday February 8 at The University of Leeds. As well as welcoming in the Year of the Rooster with a black tie celebration, there will be networking opportunities, dinner and a talk on the Chinese business environment. They will also be holding the Yorkshire and Humber China Business Awards on the night.

The Sheffield Chinese New Year Celebration is the largest indoor annual Chinese cultural show in the UK.  With local and international performances executed infront of an audience of 2,000, the event is set to be a great way to see in the year of the rooster. The cultural programme will be taking place at Sheffield City Hall on Tuesday January 31.

On February 4, guests are invited to come and welcome in the Chinese New Year with an exciting show celebrating Chinese tradition and culture. Chinese New Year Extravaganza features a team of performers direct from China. Visitors will witness the daring stunts of Chinese acrobatics alongside elegant Chinese dance, energetic kung fu performance, a highly skilled puppeteer and a traditional lion dance.

On Sunday January 29, Leeds Chinese Community Association will be hosting it’s annual Chinese New Year Festival in the heart of Leeds. The Town Hall will be offering a range of activities including dancing, music, calligraphy, acrobatics, Tai chi, traditional Chinese food, crafts and face painting.

Corn Exchange, LeedsChinese culture festival

Leeds Corn Exchange will be celebrating the beginning of the year of the rooster on Saturday 28 January with the Chinese Culture Festival. For one day only, the organisers of last year’s Magical Lantern Festival will be taking over the venue with food, drink, dance and performances. Painting and calligraphy workshops will also be taking place alongside East Asian-inspired stalls from Yellow Sunrise.

Meadowhall shopping centre will be hosting its Chinese New Year celebrations on Saturday January 28 with a range of in-centre activities planned from 10am until 4pm. Displays from Chinese lion dancers will be warding off bad spirits and Fortune Cookies will be handed out at the shopping centre too. Customers are also being encouraged to take part in the Chopstick Challenge, where they can test their speed and agility for a chance to win a £100 voucher to spend in Meadowhall’s Wagamama, Yo! Sushi or Chaobaby.
