Medieval client for building surveyor with Minster appointment

A Hull-based chartered building surveyor is celebrating his appointment to
Beverley Minster, one of the oldest and best-known buildings in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Simon Delaney from Delaney Marling Partnership has been appointed by the Beverley Minster Old Fund.

Beverley Minster is an iconic landmark standing proud on the skyline. It is a building that appeals to visitors and tourists from around the world as a place of worship and for its medieval architecture. The recent filming of King Charles III and Victoria are further enhancing its appeal to film companies in the US as it doubles for Westminster Abbey in BBC & ITV dramas.

Delaney says: “This is a very exciting opportunity to work on such a fantastic building which can be seen for miles around Beverley. It would be a dream job for anyone working in the property sector. As a chartered building surveyor my role will be to manage the maintenance team and liaise with the other experts working on the building. A building of this type needs constant maintenance to preserve its condition.

“Larger projects are required periodically to keep the building up-to-date and accessible to the thousands that visit each year. This year for example works have included a new fire alarm system and the rebuilding of the stone mason’s yard. There will be ongoing repairs to glazing and stone pinnacles as part of the continued conservation of the building.”

He added: “I am really looking forward to getting to know the building in detail. Stepping into John English’s shoes after ten years will be no small task as there are so many different rooms, levels and spaces that aren’t obvious when looking around the main part of the Minster.”

English said: “It was a great privilege when at the beginning of 2006 I became surveyor to this magnificent medieval structure. I have loved every minute of working with great professionals, our chairman and the excellent Old Fund Trustees and witnessed the continuing improvement in the condition of the Minster.

“As I look towards retirement however it is with sadness that I hand over the reins to a younger person. I have complete confidence in Simon Delaney who is a building surveyor with the necessary experience in conservation projects.”
