Team appointed to multi-million pound BMW Humber development

Howarth Litchfield and Clugston Construction will be teaming up to build Able Group’s multi-million pound vehicle storage and distribution centre on the South Bank of the Humber at Immingham.

The 6000 sq m facility is being delivered by Clugston under a design and build contract with Howarth.

The project is due to start on site on March 6 and is scheduled to last 30 weeks.

The unit, which will be used by BMW UK, will see several thousand vehicles passing through each year to be prepared, cleaned and inspected before transportation to retailers throughout the country.

Howarth Litchfield director Neil Turner said: “We were very pleased to secure this appointment and hope that it marks the start of a longer term relationship for Howarth Litchfield at this site where the Able Group has exciting and ambitious development plans.

“We enjoy continued success in the commercial, industrial and automotive sectors, where we have sound experience of designing and building the kind of large portal frame steel structure required for this project and will be liaising closely with all our project partners to ensure that we meet the design and delivery criteria of both BMW and Able as we seek to develop an elegant building design solution.”

Clugston’s managing director Steve Radcliffe said: “Due to the project’s proximity to our head office in Scunthorpe and our 80-year association with the region, Clugston Construction will endeavour to use its established local supply chain wherever possible.

“We are looking forward to working with Able and Howarth Litchfield and through collaboration and teamwork we will seek to minimise the impact of our construction activities on the ongoing site operations.”

Neil Etherington, business development director of the Able  Group, added:  “This current project for BMW is one of a number of major works we anticipate in the near future and we have selected a capable, experienced team to undertake it.  We are fully confident that the PDI will be completed and delivered on time and within budget.

“Able Humber Port, by any measure, is a major development of strategic significance. It has been earmarked by government as a key location for the marine renewable energy sector and is the biggest part of the UK’s largest Enterprise Zone. The contract with BMW is an important element in continuing progress and we are delighted to be working with such a strong and committed team of professionals.”
