UK’s compensation culture modest in reality

BRITAIN does not have a greedy compensation culture despite claims to the contrary, according to research.
In fact, the majority of people making claims have modest expectations for compensation following injuries at work.
The YouGov and Hubbard Pegman & Whitney (HPW) joint study based on a representative sample of around 2,000 adults revealed that while more than 90% expect some form of monetary compensation after an injury at work, people typically underestimate how much they would receive.
More than 40% of adults expected payment of £2,000 or less for an arm fractured at work despite typical compensation being in the region of £6,000.
Around 30% thought that they would receive £20,000 or less for the loss of an eye. Typical compensation according to HPW is £31,500.
Charlotte Pegman, managing pof HPW said: “Not only are most compensation awards unspectacular, but most people actually have very modest expectations – typically in-line with average awards or even expecting substantially less.
“Our research indicates to us that most people only want fair and reasonable compensation when they are injured at work.”
