Grant Thornton beats rivals in deals league table

GRANT Thornton has leapt ahead of its competitors in the deal rankings for 2008, becoming the UK’s most active corporate finance adviser.

The financial advisory firm also comes out on top regionally heading the Yorkshire rankings ahead of rivals such as Deloitte, Baker Tilly, and KPMG.

In national league tables published this month by Corpfin, Grant Thornton provided corporate finance advice on 157 UK transactions for all deal values in the calendar year 2008.

In Yorkshire, Grant Thornton’s corporate finance team advised on 17 transactions ahead of Deloitte with 14 and Baker Tilly with 11.

Ian Marwood, who heads Grant Thornton’s corporate finance team in Leeds, said: “I am delighted that we came out as the region’s most active adviser following a challenging year.

“This achievement is testament to the ability of our team to anticipate areas where activity is likely to happen.”

The Yorkshire team’s deal highlights during the year included the disposal of food manufacturer J&J Tranfield to Vion, the managing buyout (MBO) of electrical equipment manufacturer CMD, and the MBO of GT News among others.

Encouragingly, Yorkshire was the only UK region where the number of deals increased in quarter four of 2008. A total of 92 transactions were announced during that period – a 7% increase on the previous quarter.
