Tarmac joins clean energy trials

TARMAC Group has become the latest name to join energy storage and clean fuel company ITM Power’s Hydrogen On Site Trials (HOST) of its transportable high pressure refueling unit (HFuel).
Tarmac is the UK’s largest quarrying company and a leading supplier of construction materials.
ITM Power’s chief executive, Graham Cooley, said: “We are obviously delighted that Tarmac, the UK’s largest quarrying company and a leading supplier of building materials to the construction industry, has joined our HOST programme.
“Their assessment of our energy storage: clean fuel technology, using renewable energy, for decarbonising return to base logistics fleet vehicles, will provide ITM Power with useful data from another vital sector in the global economy.”
Dr Martyn Kenny, head of sustainability at Tarmac, said: “There is an urgent need for the construction industry to reduce the carbon footprint of its vehicles and Tarmac recognises the importance of testing the viability of emerging alternative fuels. These important trials will help us assess the feasibility of decarbonising vehicle fleets using hydrogen derived from renewable energy.”
