Grant to support Bradford apprenticeships

BRADFORD Training Association has provided a £120,000 grant to support apprenticeships in the city.
The money will be used to encourage manufacturing businesses in Bradford to take on new apprentices by offsetting some of the training costs involved.
BTAL managing director John Igoe said: “There is an ageing craft and technical workforce in the UK and so it is crucial that we protect our manufacturing capabilities by helping companies attract young people into the sector.
“However, placing an apprentice is just the start. For schemes to be truly effective it is essential each one completes their four-year framework course. This depends on the training organisation and employer working closely together to ensure both experiences are interesting and rewarding.
“We were delighted therefore that our recent Ofsted report highlighted our success in ensuring a high percentage of our apprentices complete the framework requirements, leading to them being sponsored by companies to go on and complete degrees and management courses.”

The latest grant follows a similar £50,000 scheme last year. The new money will be used to bridge the gap between Government funding and the first year’s training costs for advanced apprentices.
BTAL was formed in 1967 by ten Bradford engineering companies to support apprentice recruitment and training.
