Great Yorkshire Show sets ambitious recycling target

THE Great Yorkshire Show has appointed Yorwaste to provide waste management, cleaning and litter collection services during the famous annual show.

The three-day show in July attracts more than 125,000 visitors every and generates more than 100 tonnes of rubbish.

Yorwaste managing director Steve Grieve said the North Yorkshire firm was very excited at winning the contract, which was “somewhat different” to its usual services.

“In order to encourage greater recycling of waste during the show, we will replace the usual rubbish bins with banks of recycling containers to collect paper, glass, plastic and cans,” he said.

“We are expecting to be able to recycle 60% of the rubbish we collect.”

Nigel Morgan, operations manager at the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, which organises the show, added: “We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously, so we are delighted that Yorwaste is going to introduce effective ways of recycling much of the waste that the Great Yorkshire Show generates.”
