Clarion and Leeds BID gather expert panel to discuss the challenges faced in the leisure sector

After an unprecedented couple of years with the leisure sector experiencing more disruption than most, the effects for some businesses have been crippling and all are having to continuously adapt their business models.
Whilst maintaining a safe environment is currently the priority for leisure businesses, with flexible working set to continue, what can businesses do to create an appealing environment going forwards to entice those customers that are coming into town and city centres?
To discuss some of the issues facing the sector, Clarion and Leeds BID are bringing together a panel of experts who will share insights and advice on how best to navigate the challenges including:
- Managing a flexible workforce – recruitment, motivation and retention of a UK and international team – Suzanne Treen, Legal Director, Employment, Clarion
- Commercial tenants and rent management – with the current moratorium ending in March is that the end of rent flexibility? – Sophie Morley, Partner, Property Litigation, Clarion
- Achieving Regulatory compliance – managing safety and enforcement risk in an uncertain environment – Sarah Taylor, Partner, Regulatory, Clarion
- Venue and space planning – what lies ahead to maximise an appealing environment for customers – Richard Irving, ID Planning
The event will also provide plenty of opportunity to put questions to the panel and meet with other business leaders across the Yorkshire leisure community to exchange ideas.
Ben Lamb, Partner in Clarion’s real estate team, explains: “Despite the UK returning to some level of normality, the challenges for the leisure sector don’t stop there. Struggles to recruit and retain staff are causing issues across the sector, particularly when coupled with COVID-related absences. For those based in city and town centre locations, the lack of footfall due to office workers working from home and the reluctance of some to return to bars and restaurants, is causing huge reductions in income. So far, the moratorium on rent has gone some way to alleviate the financial pressure, but with this due to end in March – what does that mean in terms of rent flexibility going forwards?
“These are just some of the challenges facing businesses in the fast-changing leisure sector – our expert panel will be looking at how they can adapt in the post-COVID environment which could be vital to their survival.”
