A large fire has destroyed much of Nottingham’s historic Cattle Market.

The blaze, which started at around 6pm on Sunday evening, was brought under control at around midnight last night, but many businesses in the area will have been affected and the Monday morning commute looks set for delays.

At the moment, London Road outbound into Cattle Market Road is closed as is Meadow Lane running down the side of Notts County’s ground. Incinerator Road and Clarke Road are also closed to traffic.

At the height of the blaze, residents were asked to stay indoors and keep their windows shut as gas canisters exploded.

Notts County’s nearby Meadow Lane ground is said to be unaffected.

It is unknown how the fire started.

Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service are due to give an update on the incident this morning.
