Mixed-use plan to revitalise Nottingham pub denied

How the new development will look

Plans to revive a Nottingham pub that first opened in Victorian times but has been derelict for seven years have been thrown out by the City Council’s Planning Committee.

A spokesperson from architect Leonard Design told TheBusinessDesk.com the scheme to re-open The Grove pub and turn the upper floors into student flats was turned down by the committee after it objected to siting more student accommodation in the Lenton area of the city, despite planning chiefs recommending the development for approval.

The plans were submitted by Sam Burt of Carlton Street Trading who wanted to refurbish the former Grove pub and build an extension to its rear to provide 38 student bedrooms.

Speaking last month, Burt said: “Developments such as the Grove are prime examples of how we can bring derelict Victorian pubs back into the community. It would be a great shame for the community to lose these grand spaces so through regenerating the area surrounding the building and creating a new mix of uses, we’re aiming to get the pub back in use. It would be fantastic to see more of these developments happening across the city.”
