Bentley launches new Continental GT

LUXURY car maker Bentley Motors has unveiled the new version of its Continental GT – which when first launched in 2003 became a must-have for footballers and celebrities alike.

The Crewe-based company’s chairman and chief executive Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen heralded the updated model as “an automotive work of art.”

Bentley, which is now part of Germany’s VW AG, says the new model – which features a more futuristic body shape – will be available from next year.

It is lighter and more fuel efficient, but can still achieve 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds and reach 198mph. Other new features include using Google Maps as part of its satellite navigation system.newbentley2

When the Continental GT first came on the market in 2003, it became a huge commercial success for the brand, as the likes of David Beckham and Paris Hilton chose it. More than 22,000 vehicles were sold worldwide.

Dr Paefgen added: “It drives like a supercar, but without the usual sacrifices in ride or practicality. It is a car that you can enjoy every moment of every day.”

Despite the recession, which has hit sales globally, Bentley has continued to invest in new models, or adapt existing marques for specific markets where demand has been robust, such as the Middle East and China.

Most recent financial figures, for 2008, saw sales fall to £829.4m from £941.4m the year before.
