Digital connectivity property scheme launches

The global rating scheme for digital connectivity WiredScore is to launch in Birmingham.

3m sq ft of office space in the city is to be assessed with at least 16 landlords and developers committed to the scheme, including Hermes, which is part of the Paradise consortium, and Three Snowhill’s Ballymore and M&G.

WiredScore promotes greater transparency around connectivity and digital infrastructure. Its rating scheme, Wired Certification, provides landlords and developers with an independent benchmark and insights to improve and future-proof their buildings’ connectivity standards.

WiredScore was founded in New York in 2013 and launched in the UK two years later. It now also operates in Ireland, France, Germany and Canada.

William Newton, EMEA managing director at WiredScore, said: “Birmingham represents the next natural step for us in our UK expansion, as England’s second city it is a significant market for the national economy. This has become even more apparent given the demand from decision makers for connectivity in the city.”

Research by WiredScore showed that 97% of business leaders stressed the significance of connectivity when selecting office space – ahead of price, location and environmental friendliness – and 88% thought internet connectivity should be provided as a priority and maintained by the landlord of their office buildings.

Neil Rami, chief executive at the West Midlands Growth Company, added: “Digital connectivity is increasingly becoming an integral decision making factor for businesses looking to expand or relocate in the region.

“The West Midlands becoming the UK’s first 5G test bed will ensure the region is responding to this demand and offering the optimum environment for businesses looking to grow and innovate.”
