Chamber lines up Olympic rower as speaker for Women in Business conference

GREATER Birmingham Chamber of Commerce has added Olympic rowing silver medallist Dr Cath Bishop to the list of speakers at this month’s Women in Business conference.

Dr Bishop, now a motivational speaker, is a triple Olympian in the British rowing team having competed in at the Atlanta, Sydney and Athens. Her opening address will focus on motivation and leadership.

Dr Bishop became World Champion in 2003 and won the Olympic silver medal a year later in the pairs with Katherine Grainger.

She is a Cambridge graduate in modern languages, with a Masters in International Politics and a PhD in German.  Dr Bishop also worked as a British diplomat for over 10 years, specialising in stabilisation in fragile and conflict affected countries, with postings to Bosnia and Iraq.  

She draws on her extensive knowledge of the worlds of high performance sport and international diplomacy as a speaker to business schools and companies.  

The conference, which takes place at De Vere Venues, Colmore Gate, Birmingham, on Monday, March 17, will also feature a speech from Professor Judith Baxter, Professor of Applied Linguistics at Aston University, who has joined forces with the GBCC to launch the online series entitled ‘Using Language Effectively’.

Other speakers include include Lorely Burt, MP for Solihull, Sameena Ali Khan, ITV Central presenter, and Patricia Freshwater, of Business Adrenaline. The event will also include a company case study and a panel discussion.

GBCC Policy and Patron Advisor Henrietta Brealey said: “Ensuring equality at work is of real interest to businesses. Our Women in Business Conference is an important part of the chamber’s work on this agenda. Delegates will have the opportunity to learn new skills, develop their awareness of best practice and engage in debate and discussion on a wide range of topical issues.”
