Hundreds of new apartments set for Birmingham city centre

HUNDREDS of new apartments are set to be built in Birmingham city centre in the second phase of a major new residential scheme.

Masshouse Developments Ltd has applied for permission to build 223 new apartments as part of the second stage of the Exchange Square scheme.

The 17,971 sqm development comprises a part nine-storey, part 16-storey building, including ground and lower ground floors, to accommodate the new apartments.

The first – and larger – phase of the scheme has already been approved.

The development would also comprise 2,097sqm of retail space together with associated landscaping, public realm and car parking.

Outline consent has already been granted for the scheme and reserved matters associated with the scheme are being recommended for approval at Thursday’s (May 12) planning committee.

The scheme proposes a new public square adjacent to the Mclaren tower and Priory Queensway and with a new development block to the east, facing the junction of Priory Queensway and Moor Street Queensway.

The residential mix will comprise: 29 studio apartments (13%) of the total development), 115 one bedroom apartments (52%), 65 two bedroom apartments (29%), and 14 three bedroom apartments (6%).

The site of the development close to the proposed terminus of HS2 at Curzon Eastside is expected to be a major selling point for the apartments, while the proposed retail uses incorporated into the scheme are expected to general between 89 and 119 new jobs.

The completed Exchange Square scheme will complete the redevelopment of the former Masshouse gyratory – with the exception of the site previously earmarked for the city’s new magistrates court.
