Asia-Pacific expansion for DLA Piper

DLA Piper is to integrate its Australian partner DLA Phillips Fox, extending the firm’s reach across the Asia-Pacific region.

Partners will vote on the proposal which will see DLA become a firm of 70 offices in 30 countries employing 4,000 lawyers across its global operation.

Sarah Day, managing partner in waiting of DLA Piper in Leeds and a member of the firm’s international board said: “From Leeds we are proud to advise regional, national and increasingly international clients.

“Many Yorkshire-based businesses continue to prosper through links with international markets. We can offer the benefit of a seamless international reach, market-leading expertise and contacts in key jurisdictions. The integration will add to this offer and is focused on markets that are increasingly important to Yorkshire businesses.”

The agreement is due to come into effect on May 1 with Leeds University graduate Alastair Da Costa becoming managing director for the Asia-Pacific business.

He said: “Economic influence in the world is moving to the Asia-Pacific region. This integration of two leading law firms with a well established presence in the world’s most dynamic markets and the resource-rich, developed economy of Australia will be attractive to the growing number of companies which are building businesses spanning the region.”

The Asia-Pacific business is expected to have revenues of over £195m and will be made up of more than 700 lawyers in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Thailand.
