Leeds has a great musical backdrop, predominantly coming from its vibrant club scene. Unlike cities such as Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, London, Glasgow and the rest, we only have a handful of bands that have made it past obscurity into the mainstream.
It’s not that the talent isn’t in the city, it’s just that this talent isn’t harnessed and not all our kids get the opportunities or facilities to realise their dreams. That’s something we aim to change and with your help this will be possible.
Our aim is to open a fully equipped music school, a creative place not just for the privileged. This will be a place for everybody from young to old, as well as any social background or ethnicity, those with any kind of ability or disability, built by the people for the people.
Catering for everyone, from being a drop in centre for budding artists and DJs needing access to equipment out of their reach, to nurturing skills through providing facilities that offer full academic courses, eventually introducing those at degree level.
For those who can afford it there will be fees and for those who can’t, it will be free. With government cutbacks creativity is being stifled. There are many young bright lights in this city that are yet to be switched on. We’re talking about the next generation, so why don’t you all just fu-fu-fu-fu-fu-fundraise away.
Any donations, big or small, will help these bright sparks shine with the rest and make us all loud and proud.
We have several fundraising events planned for the coming year and have begun putting the cogs into motion through crowd funding as well as our own events, the proceeds from which are being ploughed into building the academy.On this momentous occasion, which will go down in Leeds’ history, you can also help and be a part of the future. Many of you that have graced the dance floors of Back To Basics in the past have gone on to become the movers and shakers at the heart of this city, having hung up your dancing shoes long ago, dusting them off for this super special occasion.
